Shape
Discover Your Diamond Shape
Each diamond shape carries its own charm and distinct qualities. Understanding these characteristics helps you find the perfect stone. Explore the shapes below to learn how to choose a diamond that reflects true beauty.
Round
The round brilliant cut is the most popular diamond shape, admired for its unmatched brilliance and timeless appeal. A round diamond allows flexibility when balancing cut, color, and clarity, while still delivering maximum fire and sparkle. For the best brilliance, choose diamonds with Ideal or Very Good cut grades along with excellent polish and symmetry.
Princess
One of the most sought-after fancy shapes, the princess cut is known for its sharp corners and square outline. Its exceptional sparkle makes it a favorite for engagement rings. Princess diamonds may appear square or rectangular depending on the length-to-width ratio — 1.00–1.05 for a square look or 1.10+ for a more rectangular style.
Emerald
With its long facets and large open table, the emerald cut offers a striking hall-of-mirrors effect. This shape emphasizes clarity more than brilliance, so choose higher clarity grades for a clean, elegant look. Emerald cuts can range from square to elongated rectangular styles, offering versatile design options.
Asscher
Similar to the emerald cut but perfectly square, the Asscher cut exudes vintage charm. Its deep step facets create a bold and sophisticated sparkle. With length-to-width ratios between 1.00–1.05, every Asscher diamond maintains its iconic square form.
Marquise
Known for its elongated shape with pointed ends, the marquise diamond maximizes carat weight, creating the illusion of a larger stone. Its design elongates the fingers and pairs beautifully with round or pear-shaped side stones.
Oval
The oval cut blends the brilliance of a round diamond with a unique elongated form. Its shape not only enhances sparkle but also flatters the hand by making fingers appear longer. For traditional proportions, select length-to-width ratios between 1.33–1.66.
Radiant
The radiant cut combines trimmed corners with a dazzling brilliance, making it a versatile and modern choice. It pairs well with both round and baguette side stones. Radiant cuts may appear square (1.00–1.05 ratio) or rectangular (1.10+ ratio), depending on preference.
Pear
Also known as the teardrop, the pear-shaped diamond combines a rounded end with a pointed tip. This cut offers elegance and a slimming effect on the fingers. For a classic look, choose ratios between 1.45–1.75.
Heart
The ultimate symbol of romance, the heart-shaped diamond stands out as a bold and sentimental choice. For balance and beauty, select diamonds with ratios between 0.90–1.10.
Cushion
Loved for its soft corners and pillow-like shape, the cushion cut has been a classic favorite for over a century. Its large facets enhance brilliance while highlighting clarity. Ratios between 1.00–1.05 create a square cushion, while longer ratios offer a rectangular look.
FL, IF
Flawless, Internally Flawless: No visible internal or external imperfections. Internally Flawless diamonds have no internal inclusions. Extremely rare and highly prized.
VVS1, VVS2
Very, Very Slightly Included: Inclusions are so tiny they are very difficult to detect even under 10x magnification. Represents exceptional quality.
VS1, VS2
Very Slightly Included: Minor inclusions that are not visible to the naked eye. A more affordable choice compared to VVS grades while still maintaining great quality.
SI1, SI2
Slightly Included: Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification and may sometimes be visible to the naked eye. Offers a good balance between quality and value.
I1
Included: Diamonds with inclusions visible to the naked eye. Mahima provides only a limited selection of I1 grade diamonds, ensuring acceptable beauty and durability.
I2, I3
We do not offer diamonds in I2 or I3 grades, as they do not meet Mahima’s quality standards.
For most buyers, an eye-clean diamond—where imperfections are not visible without magnification—offers the best value. These stones provide brilliance and beauty at a lower cost than rare flawless (FL) or internally flawless (IF) diamonds. SI-grade diamonds are particularly popular because their inclusions are not usually visible to the naked eye, making them both valuable and budget-friendly.
What is Diamond Cut?
Among all the factors that define a diamond’s beauty, cut is considered the most important. A well-cut diamond maximizes brilliance, sparkle, and fire.
The cut grade evaluates how well a diamond interacts with light:
Ideal Proportions: Reflects light perfectly, returning brilliance through the top (table).
Too Shallow: Light escapes from the bottom, reducing sparkle.
Too Deep: Light leaks out from the sides, diminishing brilliance.
At Mahima Diamonds, our gemologists recommend choosing the highest cut grade your budget allows, as cut has the greatest impact on a diamond’s appearance.
Ideal Cut
Represents the top ~3% of diamonds in terms of cut quality. An ideal cut reflects nearly all the light that enters the stone, creating maximum brilliance. Rare and exquisite, this is the finest cut available.
Very Good Cut
Covers approximately the top 15% of diamond quality. Reflects almost as much light as an ideal cut but comes at a more affordable price, making it an excellent choice for value and beauty.
Good Cut
Represents the top 25% of diamond quality. Reflects most of the light entering the stone and offers great brilliance at a lower price point compared to higher cut grades.
Fair Cut
Represents about 35% of diamond quality. Although still a quality diamond, it will not sparkle as brilliantly as a good or very good cut.
Poor Cut
Diamonds cut too shallow or too deep fall into this category, causing light to escape from the sides or bottom. As a result, brilliance is greatly reduced. Mahima Diamonds does not offer Poor Cut grade diamonds, ensuring only high-quality brilliance for our customers.
For most buyers, diamonds with a Good or Very Good cut strike the perfect balance between beauty and value. They deliver brilliance, sparkle, and elegance without exceeding budget limits.
Understanding Carat
Carat is the measure of a diamond’s weight, not its size. Since diamonds are viewed from the top when set in jewelry, the actual size perception depends not only on carat weight but also on the cut grade and the stone’s dimensions (length, width, and depth).
Carat Size and Appearance
A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, often appearing larger than its actual weight.
A poorly cut diamond may hide weight in its base, making it look smaller despite being heavier.
For example, a 2-carat diamond will not appear double the size of a 1-carat diamond when viewed from above.
Diamond Carat Size Chart
Carat charts provide a visual guide to how diamonds of various carat weights and shapes appear from the top view. Note that proportions, table size, and depth can slightly alter the perceived size.
Choosing the right carat weight depends on three main factors: finger size, setting style, and budget.
If you prefer a larger stone but have budget limits, consider a diamond with a Good cut, SI1–SI2 clarity, and I–J color grade. These options balance size with affordability while still offering beauty.
Diamond prices rise sharply at full-carat and half-carat marks. Choosing a stone slightly below these weights often saves money with no visible difference in size.
Finger size also affects appearance—a 1.5-carat solitaire looks significantly larger on a size 4 finger than on a size 8.
✨ Tip: A well-cut diamond will often look bigger and more brilliant than a heavier stone with poor proportions.
Diamond “color” actually refers to the absence of color. The grading scale runs from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown).
The less color present, the higher the grade.
After cut, color is considered the second most important factor in a diamond’s beauty, since the eye perceives sparkle first, then color.
At Mahima Diamonds, we offer only high-quality stones, graded D–J, which range from colorless to near-colorless. These grades appear stunning and radiant to the naked eye.
For a pure, icy look, choose a D–F colorless diamond.
For a balance of beauty and value, G–J diamonds are an excellent option, appearing virtually colorless while offering affordability.
Absolutely Colorless – The highest color grade, exceptionally rare and sought after.
Colorless – Minute traces of color detectable only by expert gemologists. Considered rare and valuable.
Near Colorless – Color is difficult to detect unless compared side-by-side with higher grades. Excellent balance of beauty and value.
Near Colorless – Slightly detectable warmth, but still offers exceptional brilliance and outstanding value.
Faint Color – Noticeable tint. Not carried by Mahima Diamonds.
Visible Color – Obvious color tint. Not carried by Mahima Diamonds.
✨ Tip: For the best value, choose diamonds graded G–J, which appear virtually colorless to the naked eye while being more affordable than D–F grades.
Every diamond purchase should come with a certificate, guaranteeing that the stone has undergone a professional, unbiased evaluation. Certification ensures complete transparency and confidence in your diamond’s quality.
A diamond certificate (also called a grading report, dossier, or quality document) is prepared by trained gemologists using advanced tools such as a jeweler’s loupe, microscope, and precision measuring equipment.
The certificate details:

Clarity
Color
Polish

Gold is one of the most cherished precious metals, instantly recognized for its distinct yellow color. It is naturally resistant to rust, tarnish, and corrosion. Despite its strength, gold is the most malleable of all precious metals, allowing it to be shaped into intricate and beautiful jewelry designs.
Pure gold is too soft for everyday wear, so it is alloyed with metals like silver, copper, nickel, and zinc for added strength and durability. Purity is measured in karats (k), expressed in 24ths:
24K (100% gold): Too soft for fine jewelry
22K (91.66% gold): Still too soft for delicate designs
18K (75% gold): Ideal for fine jewelry
14K (58.3% gold): Durable and excellent for everyday wear
10K (41.7% gold): Not suitable for fine jewelry
At Mahima Exchange, we specialize in 18K and 14K gold jewelry, crafted with precision and artistry for timeless elegance.
Yellow Gold: Created using natural gold with copper and silver alloys, giving it a warm, rich shine.
White Gold: Mixed with white metal alloys and plated with rhodium for a bright, silvery appearance. Over time, rhodium plating may need reapplication to maintain brilliance.
Rose Gold: Achieves its romantic pink hue from a higher concentration of copper alloys.
Gold prices depend on:
Purity (karat weight)
Global market value of gold
Level of craftsmanship and design complexity
Gold should be handled with care:
Avoid contact with chlorine and harsh chemicals.
Remove jewelry when swimming or cleaning.
Clean with warm water, mild soap, and a soft-bristled brush to preserve its shine.
Platinum is one of the most desired metals for engagement rings and wedding bands, loved for its natural white sheen that never fades.
Naturally dense and durable, making it the most secure setting for diamonds and gemstones.
Its white brilliance does not require re-plating.
Over time, platinum may develop a subtle patina of wear, giving it a unique, antique-like character. Many consider this patina highly desirable. Its original shine can be restored with gentle polishing or buffing.
Platinum is 30 times rarer than gold and naturally hypoallergenic, making it perfect for sensitive skin. Fine platinum jewelry typically carries a PGI certification and is usually 95% pure (Pt 950).
Clean platinum jewelry in warm soapy water and scrub gently with a soft brush.
Store separately to avoid scratches from other metals.

Diamond Carat
When choosing a diamond, carat weight alone should not define your decision. The beauty of a diamond also depends on its cut grade and proportions. A well-cut diamond often looks larger and more brilliant than a heavier but poorly cut stone. Prices rise sharply at full- and half-carat points, so consider cut quality over size to get the best sparkle within your budget.
Diamond Colour
Colour plays a vital role, especially in diamonds above two carats. While differences between grades (such as G to H) are often invisible to the naked eye, they can significantly impact price. Brilliant cuts like round and princess mask colour better, while the choice of metal can enhance appearance—yellow gold complements warmer tones (I–J), while platinum or white gold suits near-colourless grades (D–H).
Diamond Clarity
Most inclusions are too small to see without magnification. For budget-friendly options, imperfections can be hidden under prongs without affecting beauty. Step-cut shapes like Asscher and Emerald require higher clarity (VS1 or better) to maintain transparency, while brilliant cuts can sparkle beautifully even at slightly lower clarity grades.
Diamond Cut
Above all, cut is the most important factor—it defines brilliance, fire, and scintillation. A well-cut diamond will appear more stunning and lively, often making it look bigger than its carat weight suggests. Always prioritize the highest cut grade possible within your budget for maximum beauty and value.
